A Christmas thought:

The last couple of days, Annie's ninth-grade band students were bagging groceries as a fundraiser for a trip to Chicago. Being friendly students, as well as public school students in a pluralistic society, they wished the customers "Happy Holidays."

(At least) one person was taken aback by that, telling the poor fourteen-year-old, "Don't say 'Happy Holidays,' say 'Merry Christmas.' This country wasn't founded on 'Holidays,' it was founded on 'Christmas!'"

I said that I thought this country was founded on the Fourth of July.
