As I have been reading Blue Latitudes, a very nice story that liberally refers to the journal of Captain Cook, and I am also familiar with the journals of Lewis and Clark, not to mention all this blog stuff, I got to thinking about missing blog posts. What if Cook or Lewis and Clark tore pages out of their journals because they changed their minds? Who knows if they really actually did or not? What does history lose by the retroactive editing of journals? Should blogs be considered the equivalent of a hand-written journals, or a work-in-progress that is open to the public? My view is: if you're willing to state an idea in public, you should stand behind it. If you change your mind, at least let people see what your original idea was instead of sending it down the Memory Hole.
